Stargazing on Maui at Haleakala National Park

Throughout history, the night sky has always inspired wonder and awe. But, today, stargazing is not as simple as looking up since light pollution has severely impacted how many of us see the sky. However, there are still places seemingly untouched by this pollution, providing a crystal clear view of the cosmos. Stargazing on Maui is some of the best in the world due to its isolated location, high elevation, and low light pollution. Whether you are looking for the best stargazing spots on the island or want to join a guided tour, you’ve come to the right place!

Our Lahaina condo rentals at Epic Realty are approximately an hour and a half drive away from the best stargazing on the island at Haleakala National Park.

Haleakala National Park

Haleakala National Park offers the best stargazing on Maui from the summit of a volcano. The summit is 10,000 feet above sea level, so it feels like you are face to face with the Milky Way! One of the most important observatory sites is located here, even though it is not open to the general public. Spend your days at the beach and then witness the awe-inspiring dark skies at Haleakala for the perfect end to any day on Maui.

Maui Stargazing Tour

Join the Maui Stargazing tour at the Haleakala Summit and observe nebulae, star clusters, and galaxies with a local expert. Before the stars emerge, your tour will start with a spectacular sunset at the summit. You will then get a 60-minute tour of the cosmos with a portable telescope. Your expert astronomer will help you survey the constellations and witness deep-sky objects. This tour is a one-of-a-kind experience that is not to be missed!

The Maui Stargazing tour meets at the Kula Lodge parking lot.

Stargazing on Maui Tips

If you are interested in stargazing at Haleakala on your own, we have a few tips and tricks for you. Here are a few of our recommendations to make the most out of your Maui stargazing experience:

  • Many people do not realize how cold Haleakala Summit can get at night. We recommend dressing warmly in coats, hats, and long pants.
  • Many people bring snacks and something to sit on since there are no amenities for these things in the park.
  • Telescopes can be an expensive investment, so we recommend bringing a pair of binoculars as a cheaper alternative.
  • Bring a star map or download an app to help you navigate the night sky.
  • Keep your phone and flashlights off while stargazing! Your eyes will not fully adjust to the darkness if you look at white lights.
  • Have fun and respect the surrounding environment and local wildlife!
